I had a professor who was openly in love with Falstaff. In that thread, who do you consider the “crush-worthy” out of Shakespeare’s characters?

I put a lot of effort into teaching my students that they can read and enjoy Shakespeare. It can make sense and be entertaining for them. When they get it, they gain so much confidence over other things too. It’s the best moment, when they lean into it. I do wish I had more time for the history of it all though, that’s true.

1,000% agree I literally wrote my undergrad thesis about how we teach Shakespeare wrong by having students just read it. There’s literal research that teaching Shakespeare by having students watch it and (even better) perform it is SO much more effective! Shakespeare education makes me go crazy lol

Wait have you read "Shakespeare in the Bush?" I am a huge anthropology nerd and your point that anyone can understand Shakespeare made me think of that article.

I've seen other creators talk about Shakespeare with an elitist tone, but you're effusive about him and his plays, so I really enjoy listening to you. 😊

Yes! I studied Hamlet at Cambridge and then we got to go see a production of Hamlet at the Globe. I was the only theatre major in the group and in class no one understand what I was saying when I said Hamlet is hilarious, like this was entertainment people! But I was also the only one who was used to reading plays, who could imagine what the timing on stage might be like. So after we saw the play every suddenly got what I was talking about. This is for the groundlings yall!

You should lecturing college classes and teaching Shakespeare. I think you’re facinating and kids would really relate to a “younger” academic.

I adore your Shakespeare videos. I had a fabulous experience in college with a couple of professors who taught Shakespeare the exact way you described - they are plays. they are meant to be studied that way and with historical context. And oh my gods did I ever fall in love with some of the plays and poems of Shakespeare. *I'd love to hear anything you have about Twelfth Night because that was one of my favorites*

One thing I've noticed people are consistently surprised by, his how many dick jokes are in his plays. Like folks, people still had senses of humor back then. The language was just different.

If you ever wonder why history keeps forgetting that bisexuals exist, ask yourself why so many people fully within the LGBTQ+ community keep forgetting that Freddy Mercury was bisexual (not gay).

I think something about how deeply funny Shakespeare was in the appropriate moments in his work could be fun. I find that to be one of the missed opportunities in that conversation about teachers getting high schoolers to understand his work, tied into the elitism with Shakespeare and trying to only make it incredibly serious all the time. But the scathing wit is top tier
