@youcandoitgardening: This topic is so confusing for so many people! Making matters a little more confusing are the oakleaf hydrangeas (don't touch!) and the arborescens, like Annabelles and Incrediballs (hard prune in early spring too!). The wild arborescens and oakleaf hydrangeas (both native to parts of North American) are the absolute lowest maintenance and if you get either of those you don't need to remember any of this, ever. I never touch mine except to carve off pieces to spread around. Don't worry about "old wood", "new wood", just follow the species. Got it? I have a hydrangea guide if you want more guidance. I meet with people in person around the Boston area and virtually anywhere. To book a consultation (Boston or virtual) visit my Linktree or website: https://www.youcandoitgardening.com Videos are usually done by clients. #youcandoitgardening #hydrangea #pruning #gardeningforbeginners #gardeningtips
Or just wait till the deer bite the tops off and do it for you!

Will a panicle hydrangea do well in front of my house that only gets afternoon sun? The house is West facing.

“Cut back hard”. I have limelight tree. So I can cut back like a whole foot? I felt like I didn’t cut enough last spring and then I had branches snap off from the weight. So don’t want to lose another huge branch next year because I didn’t cut back enough.
