Nurses like this don’t care about the patient, they want the patient to be “punished” more moral failing.

And let’s remember the issue of addiction arises when pain ISNT treated properly.

Caught a nurse talking horribly about me over the little phones they use to answer call lights. It sent me into orbit. I regret how I acted but I was SO hurt. These were the people I was supposed to trust to take care of me

They gave me so much Advil my kidneys went from a 104 to a 40 EGFR then they try to give me Tylenol so now I just have a lot of fun showing up in total pain, of course calmly not yelling or screaming, but just suffering in front of them telling them I want no pain medication because Ibecome accustomed to what the medical have taught me *learned helplessness* 30 years of doctors giving me 600 mg of Advil twice a day destroyed my kidneys so.. how they wanna give me Tylenol to destroy my liver

Someone sent me this yesterday and I literally started crying because no wonder no medical professional ever listened to what I was talking about.

You see this with pt who experience sickle cell crisis as well, sickle cell effects a certain group of people and the "they're not in crisis" now so they don't need pain meds 🙄 forever irked

The amount of street addicts could be drastically cut if more medical professionals believed patients. When you need it and a doctor won’t or can’t prescribe it, it doesn’t stop the need for it, so you see a lot of self-medicating with street drugs, literally to survive, not to get high

You would be shocked at how many doctors and nurses peg people as "derug seeking" even when they are asking for medications that are not controlled substances like propranolol or torodol. Literally a medication for blood pressure, and the other a strong NSAID like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

In a way, isn’t everyone in the hospital seeking drugs of some sort?

This is why I don't go to the emergency room because of my pain. I do not have an addiction, but I am a chronic pain patient...

is this a specific American thing? I keep hearing about cruel nurses in the US and I might just be naive but I don’t think this is something that exists to this extent where I am (Europe). It’s shocking how dehumanizing this is. I‘m sorry this is something you have to deal with at your work.

I'm high masking autistic as well as have a high pain tolerance. I get brushed off because it doesn't matter what my pain is at, I can do whatever you need from me (painful positions for x-rays for example) and I don't express it outwardly much. If it's a 9 or 10 I may silently cry but that's about it.

As a doctor, 100% agree with you. Not my place to judge a patient, and I don’t know what pain they are in as I’m not the one in their body. Grateful for nurses like you who watch out for patients

The worst thing to ever happen to pain patients was the “war on drugs.” The restrictions placed on my doctors by people who have never felt that pain, almost cost me my life. One bad nurse is all it takes to feel that way again. I’ll try to cope at home, if at all possible 😅

Literally, unless a patient is specifically in my care to receive addiction treatment (I do not work in recovery 🤫) idgaf about “if they’re an addict.” Treat the patient, treat the pain. Pain is subjective. My one 12hr shift is not going to be the difference between a person entering recovery in the middle of an acute medical crisis. I’m there to get them through what they’ve been admitted for, as humanely and appropriately as possible.

I have tattoos, alt hair, and apparently dress “scary” because MULTIPLE nurses have told me I “appeared” drug seeking because of how I looked. I have been in the midst of passing out from pain in the er and told by nurses that they DIDNT EVEN WANT TO GIVE ME IBUPROFEN. So yes, I fully agree with you babes.

The sleep thing always confused me. I’ve had chronic pain my whole life & when I complained about pain as a kid, teachers, nurses/docs & other adults told me to “try taking a nap” & if I couldnt sleep, some of them seemed to think that was proof I was lying. But if I say I’m in 10/10 pain & I manage to force myself to sleep, that’s also proof I’m lying somehow. Do they think ppl w/ chronic pain just dont sleep? Like isnt it obvious that we *have* to adapt to sleeping thru pain to survive?

after my recent c-section I had a nurse refuse to give me pain meds immediately after I had a conversation with the doctor about how important it is to stay ahead of the pain. I called and spoke to the patient advocate and within 10 minutes the nurse came back with an apology and my pain medicine (and excuses 🙄)

I told a dental nurse I was in pain because I am resistant to anesthetics. She didn't believe me, likely because I was too calm. Then she chastised me when my heart rate went up... due to my pain.
