This might be a stretch but if the cameras heard the confession I think in a way ray was sacrificing his social life too if he for whatever reason survived. No way people would have taked that as platonic... its like THE trope in tragic romantic movies, dying and sacrificing yourself for the person u love while finally saying it

my one gripe with the movie is the whole "brother" thing. like there was enough subtext in the movie for queer people to latch onto but then they call each other brothers so straight people feel more comfortable. they never called each other that because it's very clear that not what their relationship is

the book very much has the subtext that Ray enlisted because he was ashamed about his sexuality, like quite a few people who join the military. no matter how you try and look the narrative is inherently queer
