An asylum seeker has been found guilty of murdering a young hotel worker at a railway station in Walsall. Deng Chol Majek, a Sudanese national, was convicted at Wolverhampton Crown Court of killing 27-year-old Rhiannon Skye Whyte in October 2024. Whyte, who worked at a hotel used to house asylum seekers, was attacked shortly after finishing her shift. The court heard that Majek followed Ms Whyte from her workplace to Bescot Stadium railway station, where the incident occurred. Prosecutors said CCTV footage tracked Majek’s movements from the hotel to the station, showing he had been following her that evening. After the murder, Majek was seen on camera throwing Whyte’s phone into a river, purchasing alcohol at a nearby shop, and returning to the hotel, where he was caught dancing in the car park while emergency vehicles responded to the scene. Prosecutor Jonathan Cox KC described his behaviour as “utterly callous,” saying it revealed “a total lack of remorse or humanity.” Majek, who claimed to be 19 years old but is believed to be 27, denied any involvement and told jurors he was not at the station that night. He also disputed owning the object alleged to have been used in the attack. Throughout the trial, he maintained that he had no issues with Whyte or her colleagues. The jury rejected his account, finding him guilty of murder and possession of an offensive weapon. Sentencing is due to take place in the coming weeks. Following the verdict, Whyte’s family described the year since her death as “hell on earth” and said her young son continues to struggle with her loss. #truecrime #truecrimetok #ukcrime #murder #walsall
