I think one of the wildest parts about becoming paralyzed at 22 was realizing… I had to relearn how to be an adult. Not just how to walk again, because spoiler: I didn’t, but how to live. How to shower. How to get dressed. How to go to the bathroom. How to function in society with a whole new set of rules. It’s like I got two adult lives. The one I thought I’d have, and the one I was forced to create. Now I’m 10 years in, and physically in my 30s, but mentally, I feel like I’m back in my 20s again… Figuring out who I am, what I want, and where I’m headed. Trauma does that. But honestly, so does any major life change; divorce, diagnosis, losing a parent, motherhood, moving across the country, losing a job. It cracks your identity wide open. And suddenly you’re not just navigating logistics, you’re rediscovering you. 🧠 Studies show that trauma restructures the brain, shrinking the hippocampus (which regulates memory and learning), heightening the amygdala (hello, constant threat response), and throwing off the prefrontal cortex (decision-making and focus). In other words… You literally have to rebuild your mind, not just your body. Which is exactly what I’ve been doing. Every single day. With habits, self-discipline, community, and hella grace for myself in the process. If you’ve been through trauma or are just in a season where life looks NOTHING like you planned I see you. You’re not behind. You’re rebuilding. And that takes guts. 💬 comment how you’ve had to rebuild yourself from the ground up. I’d love to hear your story. #trauma #paralysis #lifechange #wheelchair #sci
