For those asking why dogs do this; female dogs naturally become overprotective of the puppies, and that goes for everyone, but especially the dad of the puppies. The first few weeks are tough and it’s not uncommon for the father to kill or eat the puppies in order to keep breeding with the mom. She can’t breed if she’s already got puppies. This happens in nature quite a bit actually. Granted this male dog probably wasn’t gonna do that, but the mama dog doesn’t know that and is protecting her pups. After the first few weeks to a month, she’ll relax and he’ll be able to see the puppies and not be a risk.

Female dogs do not know that the male dog is the father. For them, he is just a friendly dog. She protects her litter. Male wolves and wild dogs do not approach puppies until they are stronger. Only domestic dogs do that.
