@littlemari.co: Did you know that before costumes and candy, Halloween began as All Hallows’ Eve? Hallow means “holy” or “saint.” It is the vigil before All Saints’ Day. In the early Church, major feasts often had vigils the night before (like Christmas Eve). The evening before All Saints’ naturally became a time of prayer and reflection… hence it’s called the “eve of all hallows.” Halloween was originally part of a three-day Catholic celebration called Allhallowtide: All Hallows’ Eve (Oct 31) – Vigil of prayer and fasting before the feast. All Saints’ Day (Nov 1) – Honoring all saints in Heaven. All Souls’ Day (Nov 2) – Praying for all the faithful departed in purgatory. The holy-day aspect faded as devotion to saints and purgatory was downplayed. By the 19th–20th centuries, Halloween became largely secular and commercial, focused on costumes and candy instead of prayer and fasting. It was a night to contemplate eternity, pray for the departed, and rejoice in the triumph of the saints. It is not a night of evil, but rather of hope beyond the grave.
