Unfortunately the problem with Nicaragua is that in order to be safe you have to stay the whole time in one place, in a locked community or resort. No way you could just rent a car and travel the country by yourself as in Costa Rica.

I went on a day trip from Costa Rica and I loved it! There are donkeys pulling carts as, like, a regular mode of transport. Lots of army check stops on the highway. It felt like another time and a drug highway at the same time. Not sure I would feel safe there without being in a tour group, but it was an amazing day.
