Japan’s Prime Minister earns just S$20,640/month and still wants to cut her own salary. She says ministers must lead by example and serve with humility. Meanwhile in Singapore, we have ministers like Grace Fu, who once claimed that if ministerial salaries were cut any further, it would be “difficult to take public office.” Goh Chok Tong, who said that ministers are “not paid enough.” Let that sink in. Japan, a G7 nation, with 125 million people, a far larger economy, a complex bureaucracy, and global responsibilities, has a Prime Minister earning less than many Singaporean senior civil servants or even some private-sector managers. Yet she calls for more cuts, not more perks. In contrast, Singapore’s political elite already earn S$1–2 million annually, yet constantly justify it with the claim that “we need to pay well to get good people.” If you need to be paid millions to serve, are you truly serving, or are you simply serving yourself? Japan proves that integrity and competence are not bought, they are built through culture, accountability, and a sense of moral duty to the people. This is the difference between public service and self-service. Singapore is not harder to manage than Japan. We are a city-state of 5.9 million people, not a sprawling nation managing earthquakes, ageing demographics, and global manufacturing giants. If Japan’s leaders can live with humility, Why can’t ours? If Japan’s PM can call for pay cuts, Why can’t ours? This is the spirit of public service. And shame on the PAP for forgetting what it means to serve. #LeadershipByExample #PublicServiceNotSelfService #SingaporeDeservesBetter #MinisterialPay #MakeSingaporeAffordableAgain
