This is my interpretation. There are times where sometimes, it’s best to step away. The man in black represents him, his negative thoughts and feelings that could hurt her if he gets too close when things are tough. He tries to step back to help her, so she doesn’t get hurt but then his thoughts get the better of him. When she approaches him, trying to help, he hesitates. He wants to hurt her, to keep her away but he fights back against his negative thoughts and stabs it to silence it before embracing the girl. The caption says “Self Sabotage” and if the man in black does represents his negative thoughts and feelings, it would match up
