Kim Carnes’ signature 1981 smash, "Bette Davis Eyes," is an iconic piece of 80s synth-pop, instantly recognizable by its pulsing, New Wave keyboard riff and Carnes' distinctively husky, smoky vocal delivery. The song was not an original to Carnes; it was first written in 1974 by American singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon and Donna Weiss and was recorded by DeShannon in a much slower, jazzy, or country-rock style for her 1975 album, New Arrangement. Carnes' version, which was produced by Val Garay and featured a memorable, modern arrangement by keyboardist Bill Cuomo, completely transformed the song, turning it into the global phenomenon that defined her career. The lyrics paint a portrait of a mysterious and alluring femme fatale, whose magnetic power and cunning seduction are compared to the legendary Hollywood actress Bette Davis, who was famous for her piercing, expressive eyes and intense on-screen presence. Released in March 1981 on her album Mistaken Identity, the single was a colossal hit, spending an impressive nine non-consecutive weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the biggest single of the year and earning both the Record of the Year and Song of the Year Grammys at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards. The success of the song delighted Bette Davis herself, who was then 73 years old and reportedly wrote letters to Carnes and the songwriters, thanking them for making her relevant to a new generation, and she proudly hung their gold and platinum records on her wall.
