Meta gaming is fine. ACTING on that meta knowledge is not. That's the difference. If you or your players can't stop ACTING on meta knowledge then these TTRPGs aren't for you.

There's also this demonization of meta gaming. The entire experience is an abstraction and you're pretending to be a different person in a pretend world. Some meta gaming is fine and even contributes to making the game more fun for everybody.

I know I meta game and I try hard not to do it, there is a reason why I kept telling a player who is not at the table anymore "You're not there" and another who is at the table "your character is not involved at the moment"

especially depending on how the rules framework functions too. Paranoia is going to be different from Apocalypse World, an Actual Play has to be aware of it's audience etc.

Can you define meta gaming for us. do you mean min/maxing or using outside information to make your decisions in game. because i'm a lore and vibe player. i take my stats exactly the way they roll up regardless of how bad it makes my character.

There’s still a big difference to attempting not to metagame on purpose and not.. and that’s what we refer to when we say we try not to metagame.

agree I am very good at ignoring metagame, but I prefer to be in the dark about things my character shouldn't know but as the local artist, I do get a LOT of spoilers for the sake of tokens, so it's rough out here

Brilliant point! I'd say there's a difference between 'actively' Metagaming and carrying unconscious bias or OOC knowledge... Just like with day to day life, consciously carrying your bias and 'player knowledge' and being willing to check yourself (and open to feedback from others) is key to being 'good' at role-playing. Same goes for playing people from another culture, gender group, social class or "species", do your best to represent them genuinely and be open to feedback!

Okay so I'm playing in a pathfinder 2e campaign rn and I'm familiar enough with the system to be a good player but also don't know very much so I'm having an absolute blast learning things about the world and all of the creatures and things in pathfinder it has just been so much fun being lost and clueless about a fantasy world again

Metagaming is completely expected and not always bad, but abusing it to save your characters from any repercussions of what they would normally do (and give them advantages and knowledge they haven't earned) is shitty. DMs have to metagame, it's literally the job, but there is a line of fairness. For example, that video you made about a hidden spike trap the DM didn't know about until it triggered? It would be very different if they knew, because almost every DM would just choose to avoid it or take care to protect the enemy from it.

My solution for me, a player, metagaming is to acknowledge that I know something my character doesn't and actively ask myself if my character also knows this or not. Eg. (Not an actual story) My last three characters all died in spike traps. I, as a player, want to be very cautious of things and places where spike traps would likely be. My current character would not logically have the same level of paranoia regarding them, so that's my fourth character now that's walked into a spike trap 🤦🏻‍♂

So what you do is you have a master dm that controls all the behind the scenes lore, world building and campaigns. You have them give certain quests to one group thinking they are helping and saving a town, another group another quest stopping a town from taking over the world and have those 2 parties clash both with the dms of the said parties thinking their groups are doing the right thing even though both groups are doing the right thing but from different perspectives.

to a certain extent it's important to meta game. Your character is going to know some things. You shouldn't have to roll for every little thing. Think about your character and then think would they know this? A firm yes, then they do, if you don't know roll a check.

I wonder if they’ve done reverse blind tests. Tell people they’re in the other group (placebo group gets medicine, medicine group gets placebo).

I design my games to make use of beneficial metagaming. "Player, you can make the logical choice or the interesting choice. How do you want this story to go?" When I make them active co-authors of the story we all have more fun. They even cinspire against their own characters sometimes.

it's true. as a dm I try to differentiate it as conscious vs unconscious meta gaming. however at the end of the day friends and I are playing a game to tell a collaborative story. Meta is only truly bad if it's being used selfishly or used in a way that takes away from the story or players agency. and as always what works at one table won't work the same at another. Communication and setting expectations are key to everyone having fun.

I try not to metagame, but I caught myself when we met a hag/fey witch that offered us a deal and I'm not sure my character would have known she was fey. My DM didn't correct me tho, so we just went with it.
