Save this video for foolproof shelf styling! Here’s how I approach shelf styling: 1. Start with books, duh! Group them in both horizontal and vertical orientations. Be sure to leave plenty of open space for other objects. And don’t feel pressure to get it perfect from the start, you can always move things around! Just dive in and start laying your foundation. 2. Next, add in any other blocky items. I love a pair of stacked boxes for height; and if it’s a deep shelf like this one, I’ll layer in some framed artwork too. 3. Now it’s time for your medium objects. I especially like to use rounded ones like ceramics, clocks, bowls, organically shaped sculptures, etc. to offset the square angles of all the books. This is where you’ll encounter the most trial and error, since you need to experiment with placement to find the most harmonious arrangement. Be prepared to place something on the shelf then stand back to stare at it, over and over again! 4. Lastly, add a few small objects as finishing touches. Think vintage candy dishes, trinket boxes, stones and crystals… Place these based on where you feel there are any little holes in the vignettes.
