Following the Ministerial Statement on Race and Religion, Workers' Party NCMP Andre Low rose to seek clarification, using the Minister's own cited source material—the 2024 IPS survey. Mr Low highlighted two distinct ‘perception gaps’ revealed in the survey in how different communities rated the current state of racial and religious harmony. He pointed out that minority Singaporeans and younger citizens were the groups that perceived the state of harmony less positively. Grounded in this evidence, he asked if the Government would consider recalibrating its approach to dialogue on sensitive issues of race and religion to better engage with these vital demographics. In response, the Minister's reply did not address the specific data points on these perception gaps. Instead, it characterised the call for a review of our local dialogue spaces as an importation of failed Western models. It is noteworthy, however, that later in the debate, the Minister returned to the topic. In an exchange with the Leader of the Opposition, he acknowledged the core of Mr Low’s point, stating that ‘…on many issues demographically, there are different viewpoints and it's important to analyse them carefully, not jump to conclusions.’ By asking constructive questions grounded in data, Parliament can ensure that the concerns of all Singaporeans are heard and that our policies are made more robust through rigorous debate.
