A 23-year-old British law student, Mia O’Brien, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison in Dubai after being found in possession of 50 grams of cocaine, according to multiple reports. The sentence, described by her family as a life term with a minimum of 25 years to serve, was handed down following her arrest in an apartment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) city last October. The England native was studying law at the University of Liverpool before the incident. Her mother, Danielle McKenna, 46, told British media outlets that her daughter had traveled to Dubai to visit a friend and her boyfriend but became entangled in what she called a “stupid mistake.” “She was just given a life sentence and has to serve 25 years,” McKenna said, adding that the trial was conducted entirely in Arabic, with O’Brien learning of the outcome later through her lawyer. The young woman must also pay a fine of approximately $136,000. Drug offenses in the UAE can result in lengthy prison terms, with no tolerance for even small quantities. O’Brien’s mother claimed her daughter was unaware of the drugs and was scapegoated, but critics on social media have pointed out that, as a law student, she should have been aware of the risks in a country known for its zero-tolerance policy. O’Brien is currently held in Dubai’s Al Awir Central Prison, a facility notorious for overcrowding and poor conditions. Human Rights Watch (HRW) and U.S. State Department reports have documented systemic issues in UAE prisons, including arbitrary detention, mistreatment, and torture, particularly in cases involving security or drug charges. The family is preparing to appeal the decision.
