@ginad129: Replying to @AJ An unreliable narrator has a bias and motivation that is coloring their perspective of the story. #writersontiktok #bookeditor #bookcoach #writingtips #writingcommunity
I feel like whether Katniss is an unreliable narrator gets so hotly debated and while she is biased and often cannot see things clearly she doesn’t have any ulterior motive. She is trying her best.

Everyone says Maomao from apothecary diaries, but it’s a bad subject matter for it. I love the little autistic coded girl playing detective in the rear court. I’m getting the ick from pretty boy getting frustrated because she doesn’t respond to him like everyone else.

Personally, I feel like every first-person narrator is unreliable to a point. Like most people, we are all unreliable narrators because we see the world through our own perspectiv

Okay so I was on the right track with it being more about bias. Does it count still if they genuinely believe their own bullshit? Like they don’t think they are lying. Be it delusion or conviction

I would go so far as to argue that the concept of the unreliable narrator is the only reason the HIMYM finale wasn’t as terrible as everyone claimed. The fact that he was trying to make his kids understand his life from the POV of how Robin was so central all along IS a logical ending. But nobody else seems to feel this way 😅

Do you think there could be too many unreliable narrators in a story that makes it too much for the reader? Say half of the cast is unreliable, would that affect the trust of the reader and make them don’t know what to believe what’s the truth and what’s a lie anymore?

Does it need to be in first person to be an unreliable narrator? Throne of Glass came to mind, although it’s third person, the main character we’re following is definitely concealing key information that changes the whole trajectory of the series arc from what you think at the beginning?

tell me if I'm wrong, best way to fix this, write the truth of events first, then rewrite them from each involved party's perspective as if they're telling someone and purposefully trying to make themselves be in the best light possible. Maybe even rewrite the perspective you'll use AGAIN further twisting the truth, keep going depending on their own delusions/manipulation factor.
Even from one character's perspective you can have multiple versions of the same event, the truth, what they honestly think, and what they tell others. What they tell others can be constantly changed and used as a tool for other characters to start piecing together the false story being told.

I think some folks get confused about being asked to consider the source of information, and the literary device of an unreliable narrator. As a Manga fan, I get into it about in-universe misunderstandings a lot, but that doesn't mean the story teller is using an unreliable narrator.

I always see people reference Katniss as an unreliable narrator (bc she’s young, angry at the Capitol, and biased about the games. Also deeply unobservant) but I was never convinced it fully qualified her as being unreliable. I don’t necessarily know if she has motivation. I think she’sjust a kid and that affects how she narrates. What are your thoughts on her?

I still feel the end of HIMYM was pulling the rug out rather than an “unreliable narrator.” For 9 seasons the two primary themes were: 1) all the hardships were worthwhile because they led Ted to the mother, and 2) Ted couldn’t be happy until he let go of Robin. No amount of foreshadowing changed the fact that they lied about the two main themes for nearly a decade.

HIMYM is also a good example of why having at least an outline when pitching a series is helpful. Those showrunners knew that ending and many of the major beats along the way right from the start. They had to adjust and change along the way, but you can bet if a studio exec asked them when they pitched the pilot how the series progressed, they would have had an answer.

Paper Towns by John Green! Very famous popular example of an unreliable narrator. I believe John Green has talked about his use of unreliable narrator a few times in that book

HIMYM's ending would've been okay if Ted had about a few episodes showing how he and the mother fell in love. the mother still would be barely in the entire show, but at least the changes to so many characters' growth arc in the final eps wouldn't feel too forced.

my favorite unreliable narrators are the siblings in The Lemonade War. I've used them as an example for teaching the concept. now, based on what you are saying I'm worried I'm showing it wrong. are you familiar with the book ? should I use a different children's example?
