@baby.decoded: 🥣 BLW or Purée? What matters more — motor skills or physiology? Many parents love the BLW approach — letting babies feed themselves looks “natural” and builds independence. But if we look at it physiologically, purées are much gentler for an immature digestive system. 👶 Why purées are more physiological Before 8–9 months, babies’ digestive enzymes are still developing: • Pepsin and trypsin (for protein digestion) are produced in low, unstable amounts. • Stomach acid is several times weaker than in adults. • Amylase and lipase become active only around 8–10 months. • Intestinal villi and crypts are still maturing, and the mucus barrier is thin and fragile. When solid chunks reach the intestines, they aren’t fully broken down — irritating the mucosa, disturbing pH and microbiota balance. Purées, on the other hand, are easily digested and create the ideal environment for enzyme function. 🥕 When to start? Vegetable purées can be introduced from 4 months if the baby’s stool is normal and there’s no dermatitis. 👍🏻Start with neutral vegetables: zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, pumpkin, or carrot — steamed, unsalted, and unsweetened. 🍠 Combining BLW and purées — safely You can mix both approaches: • Let your baby hold a spoon with purée — encourage self-feeding. • Roll soft, mashed grains into gentle “sticks” to train grip. • Offer very soft, steamed veggies in small pieces. If you see undigested bits in stool — the gut isn’t ready yet. • Keep the main meals as purées to ensure proper nutrition and digestion. 💡 Motor skills matter — but gut health matters more. BLW helps coordination, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of gut irritation or inflammation. When digestion is calm, enzymes work efficiently, nutrients absorb properly, and the baby eats with real joy. 🌱 #momtok #blw #babynutrition #blwvspuree #parenteducation
