Throw the first punch and you're going to have the advantage! Karate was my first sport and we were taught that If you're in a fight, you're going to have a better time if you throw and land the first punch. Many times, you get to control the fight after that. Pole vault works the same way where either you can hit the pole or the pole hits you. Who ever throws the first hit ends up in more control. The pole throws its punch the moment the pole hits the back of the box. You throw the first punch If your arms arm up tall and in a good position before the pole hits the back of the box! If your arms aren't up... the pole hits you... Hitting the butt plug higher up on the slide of the box gives you a little more time, a bigger window to get your arms all the way up allowing you to throw that first punch and controlling the vault. Its a pretty easy change that can have massive improvements in your vault! Hope this helps! Your take-off step just isn't that important. 👇 After reading that, some of you may be ready to throw a snowball at my...snowballs, but hear me out. The take off step is better treated more like a long jump board, or a range of 6 inches (15cm). If your take off is supposed to be 11 give yourself a range from 10'9-11'3. If you hit the board, you're good to go. I made a video many moons ago presenting this idea called "Your takeoff step isn't that important." Shortly after I got a email from @gduplantis580 or @mondo_duplantis Dad and coach. He said "Great video! This year Mondo jumped 5.80 or better over 10 times and his take-off step was anywhere between 12ft (3.65) to 14ft (4.26) and everything inbetween." This was the year he jumped 6.05 to win the European champs. Moral of the story is I see way too many vaulters and coaches spend too much time working about getting their take-off step perfect when perfection was getting in the way of good enough. Hope this helps! If you're looking for more head over to Team-Hoot.com and grab a copy of my book and video course! #teamhoot #polevault #polevaulter #vaulter #trackandfield
This one drill fixes so many issues that'll help you jump higher! Hips getting sucked under at the plant? ☆wall plants Is your plant late? ☆wall plants What do you do with your bottom arm? ☆wall plants For me, the 2 big cues with the plant are 1. Finish your plant before the pole hits the back of the box. I look for a tall locked top arm before there's contact with the back of the box. Wall plants do wonders for this! In younger vaulters this is the most common plant error that will have the biggest impact when corrected! 2. Find elasticity or stretch in the plant. You can plant a multitude of different ways but the common denominator is finding stretch. Wall plant drills create an easy and safe laboratory to play and find stretch before you're o the runway. Find a small pole, hold high so it'll bend, and do 10,000 Wall plants! Just be sure to stay on the ground :) This is from chapter 4 of my book over at Team-Hoot.com.
