hi bro, the dumbbell lat pulldown is actually a shoulder exercise, because gravity is acting downwards, so therefore you have to push the dumbbells up, but with a lat pulldown machine, the cable is actually having the opposite force of gravity (its pulling the weight upwards) therefore you have to pull it back down, hence lat "pull"down. 🙂🙂💪💪TL;DR - lats pull the weight up, shoulders push the weight up 💯💯🙏🙏😎😎😁

@MG.lifts: Lats contributing to a movement doesn’t mean that growth mechanisms get activated. Otherwise EVERY movement will build muscle in the tissue that contributes. Meaning everyday life would make everybody huge. Doesn’t happen because you need to isolate the target muscle fibers, progressively overload them and have high mur. For that to happen, the resistance profile has to match the direction of what the muscle actually does.. in case of lats: shoulder adduction

Just like everybody Else has been saying, gravity is a thing. This would be the equivalent to saying that doing a lat pulldown works the shoulder. Just because you do the motion doesn’t mean the muscle is being worked. Yes you may feel the sensation of your lats working here, but you may as well do it with no weights at all at that point, would be the exact same. The direction of the resistance have to match what the muscle does, for the lats shoulder extension and shoulder adduction, which means you have to have resistance pulling in the opposite direction for the lats to be worked properly.
