As someone with ADHD it also means I don’t want to have to mask. I don’t want to have to pretend I’m neurotypical. My friend group is extremely small for this reason.

I call this... spending time with not people. anyone I have to mask with is people. but those of my friends and family that I can be completely myself with. they are not people. so I want to spend time with my not people

I have never heard a woman say that. And I’m a woman so I talk to a lot of other women. We don’t say that. What I think he means is we wanna be able to not be on constant high alert. Which we would love. It doesn’t happen often.

I think another part of turning off brains is also knowing you won't be judged for making mistakes or doing something silly or just letting loose. You don't have to keep up an image like you do in public because that guy doesn't judge you like the public would

The first time I hung out with one of my favourite guy friends, a couple drunk guys made a ruckus behind us. I just about jumped out of my skin and, used to being told I was overreacting, tried to laugh at myself. He didn’t notice what I said because he was too busy squaring up on them and deciding if they were a threat. They weren’t, he relaxed, and I have literally never felt so safe as when I’m with him. I’m always thinking a million miles a minute, but when we hang out, I know that he’s thinking and anticipating, too, not just about danger but about plans and routes and timing. I feel so calm with him because I know he’s thinking about this stuff, too, and as I result, I love going places with him and just hanging out

It means I don't want to feel like I'm required to be management or cruise director every time I'm with someone. I just want to drop the mask and not have to be responsible for another person for a few hours.

Men do that, too. Not all men. Not you, obviously. I would have to be the one on-guard if we were together. Which would be fine; you only listen to men when you need to find an opinion to disagree with for content.

I never have both headphones in. It’s become such a habit not being able to hear the ambient sound around me, I can’t even wear both at home anymore, it’s genuinely uncomfortable.

If NT speech is predicated on subtext and pragmatic language structure then “want to turn my brain off” would simply be “I want to feel safe” from what I’ve noticed is that when NTs go into semantic language it’s usually because they got triggered so their logic center shuts down and the phrase is taken literally. Being triggered means it goes against his value system in some way…
