if you make someone roll on even the impossible checks, then skills not critting makes perfect sense, but if you just tell them that something is impossible and they dont even roll, then crits are just fun.

I love seeing you pop up! im very new to the dnd space (got into from bg3 and now binging critical role so forgive me if this comes off a little ignorant 😅) and I was thinking about DMing at some point, nothing big obviously, but I want to try — what about critting on some skill checks and not on others? Bc you can obviously critically fail with a Nat 1, why no critical success with a Nat 20? Obviously it comes down to circumstance, like the situation you presented here and I see some really creative ideas in the comments! I’m just curious on your thoughts!

I am currently playing a Warlock with 8 int. I heard a guard mention that there was mischief afoot in the city, so I played it as him interpreting that as mischief afoot was a person causing problems in the city. we gotta go find him. I carried that joke through 4 more guards asking to speak to their manager to get "permission" to go after this terrible "mischief afoot" person, until finally the chief of the guards brought us to the king and I nat 20d convincing him that mischief afoot was a blight on this community

honestly, i do allow skill checks to crit, but, the crit is not an automatic success, so much as the best possible outcome. also persuasion isn't mind control so there's that

in my homebrew campaign i usually do allow crits for skill checks, i think it really hightens the "effect" of a nat20 as it's seen as an "absolute success". Even though the campaign might (and has) spiraled out of control, i honestly like the aspect of unpredictability
