African lives are treated as an acceptable sacrifice in the quest for global technological progress, and nowhere is this clearer than in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A case in point is the recent tragedy at the Kalando copper-cobalt mine in Lualaba Province, DRC, where dozens were killed on 15 November when a bridge collapsed. Officials said the site had been closed due to heavy rains and landslide risks - but informal miners came anyway. The tragedy is the latest of many in Congo’s informal mining sector. Miners put their lives at risk, working for a pittance in a looted economy where there are precious few opportunities to earn enough to eat. More than a hundred years of systemic robbery and neocolonial extraction have pushed millions into dangerous, informal pits with no real safety, protection or alternatives. Exposure to toxic cobalt leads to chronic health consequences, while Congolese miners cling to the bottom rung of the global cobalt-industry hierarchy, taking home less than $5 a day. Meanwhile, global giants such as Apple, which took home $94 billion as of June 2025, are guilty of perpetuating the inequality while continuing to reap the benefits of the Congo’s resources. #DRCLivesMatter #Tragedy #Tech #MineralResources #FreeCongo
