The older I get the more I realize that the “immortal vampire in love with a teenager” trope is one of the dumbest things we have conjured in literature. I’m 54 and the idea of romantically talking to a thirty something fills me with dread, never mind a teenager. A 360 year old vampire isn’t going after Bella, he’s going after the 80 something in the nursing home, and he’s probably looking around the room for Chris Hansen to pop up out of the woodwork to tell him to “take a seat” even then. “She’s mature for her age!”, he probably has to tell his similarly aged vampire friends but they know it’s because he can’t find someone his own age.

I love this argument because it goes both ways, people are disgusted that the vampire turned at 17 dates teenagers, but also people are disgusted at the vampire that turned at 17 dating adults. And often it seems like the only thing that distinguishes between the two is the gender of the vampire. 🍵🐸
