Powerscalers do not want stories, they want a monster manual with some flavour text they could ignore.

John Wick is one of the most popular film series ever, and its about a guy winning 30v1 gunfights against other trained assassins.

A story where a strong guy beats up a weak guy IS bad writing. That’s not interesting

I’m so sure serious powerscaling is mutually exclusive with reading actual books.

RPG :
Some level of “power scaling” is necessary for making a plot work, the strong guy has to be strong for the weak guy overcoming him to be satisfying, but acting like strength is a static and constant level at all points and nobody at power 9000 can beat power 10000 is just making up rules that literally do not exist

Before the year 2000 like half of Spider-Man stories were about him beating someone he shouldn't be able to.

The Ur example of power scaling, Dragon Ball Z, is ENTIRELY about Goku overcoming stronger opponents. But when they introduced power levels (a thing EXPLICITLY meant to show the overconfidence of the villains b/c they were too focused on stats over skill) fans were OBSESSED with cataloging and comparing strengths of characters

Powerscaling and VS debating are technically different things. Powerscaling is more about index info about a character in stats.vs debating is about who would win. all vs debaters are powerscailers but not all powerscalers are vs debaters.

I mean, even look at actual history. The US military was objectively more powerful than the Viet Cong several times over, yet for all our technological superiority we were fended off by a bunch of farmers who weren't afraid to fight dirty and had a huge homefield advantage

no powerscaling can absolutely be necessary when writing a story and its definitely not a recent thing. powerscaling at its core is literally just scaling how strong a character is supposed to be in the context of a story. if we just completely ignore that aspect of writing it would make it hard to create any real tension or stakes if anyone could overcome any level of strength whenever the story demands it, for example you brought up David vs Goliath the entire point of that story is that Goliath is physically stronger than David which creates the tension for the story which forces David to improvise with a slingshot in order to win ignoring powerscaling entirely isn't enough to break a story if its not entirely focused on combat but it still should be considered an important element of a story regardless.

I think a lot of people dont realize that most fiction writers work backwards in story telling. They start with what they want the ending to be, then add details to lead up to that point. Like that ultimate multiversal threat was *always* going to lose in the end to the plucky upstart. The justification leading up to that point doesnt matter that much so long as its enjoyable to watch. It can be getting a power boost (super saiyan), finding a special item (kryptonite), or just simply the indomitable human spirit (Gurren Lagann)

powerscallers do this anytime batman is involved. like, they write about an absurd way in which batman – a human – would defeat gods

Steve Allen :
The problem is it's an entirely reactive process. Powerscaling gathers data based on what HAS HAPPENED in a story, there's nothing outside that informs the conclusions made. So it can predict nothing, because whatever happens in a story isn't a result of powerscaling, it's just...more data to go into it. Powerscaling can neither inform nor refute the outcome of any canon fight, by it's nature. So it doesn't matter how complicated the math is, Batman could just punch out Superman in a comic if the writer says so. And any reasonable person would call that bullshit. But powerscalers specifically would be forced to absorb that data into their model because that's what the whole model IS.
