Incestuous relationships can be associated with abuse, grooming or other unhealthy power dynamics hard to see from outside the family. Even if this hypothetical doesn't have that, a general taboo is still desirable for that reason

I like questions like these. In my ethics class we discussed cannablism. And the morality and cultural aspects of it. It’s wrong to kill someone and eat them, but is it wrong to eat them if they naturally died? Does it make a difference if you are doing it to survive? There are cultures that have been known to eat people once they have past. Do we define an entire culture as wrong? Or is it okay if it has cultural/ religious significance?

As long as two consenting adults engage in behavior that doesn’t harm others or violate rights, it’s not my place to judge. Ethically, it’s permissible, though personally, I find it quite…icky

rly scary how many people in these comments can’t engage in an academic hypothetical thought experiment about ethics meant to teach students to think through things that feel wrong inherently and investigate why

It is wrong. There will always be a power dynamic. One of the siblings had to pursue the other and possible change or manipulate their view of “sibling love.” It would be rare/impossible for both siblings to go against such a strong and well established social norm in the us.

Morally I think it’s wrong bc I don’t belive it’s only wrong if they have kids, I think it’s wrong mentally bc they are siblings so yes that bothers me even being adopted they still have a view of being siblings so they should both know it is wrong, it’s also got to have mental side effects like most things in life

You guys aren’t fully understanding her question, at the core she’s asking this to get an answer that considers the societal meaning we as humans have imposed onto such a practice, exclusionary of the scientific findings that have developed over time and influenced our perspective. That is at the heart of ethics

So to answer this thought experiment we'd have to look at another thought experiment called “Transgession Progression” in which transgressions committed within a two or more person system creates a safety net for the system but also opens the system up to more transgression in the future, like stealing, murder, and other forms of socially taboo ideals. Since they're already high up on the transgression progression table, they will either freefall through all of the other lower transgressions by default or escalate due to the addictive nature of committing “sins” together. Therefore it is both immoral and unethical for them to engage in the act or continue, because they are opening themselves up to a system of addiction toward the taboo that can only spiral and harm others or their mental health. It also prevents them from having healthy attachments within the social constructs and familial ties.

I think it’s wrong because the only siblings that have a romantic relationship are those that have been abused. Therefore naturally you would not look at your sibling and want to have a relationship with them.
