@rex90pawprint: So… that happened… Since the discovery of the first Nanotyrannus skull, in the Hell Creek formation (the formation from which Tyrannosaurus rex is known), there has been debate as so whether the fossil material (notably CMNH 7541 and the “Jane” specimen) belonged to the separate genus, Nanotyrannus, or were in fact juvenile T. rex, and an example of ontogenetic niche shifting (changing role in the ecosystem as they aged). This would have explained why no medium carnivores were known from the region. However, in October of 2025, Lindsay Zanno and James Napoli published an extensive study, using evidence from the “dueling dinosaurs” tyrannosaur specimen, which turned out to be a mature individual, and went on to describe a second species within the genus.
