Grace Millane (21) was a British woman from Essex backpacking around the world. In November 2018, she arrived in New Zealand - a country known for being safe, peaceful, and welcoming to travelers. On December 1st, Grace met a man through a dating app. They spent the evening together in Auckland, and this was the last time she was seen alive. In the following days, her family noticed that Grace had suddenly stopped replying to messages, something completely out of character for her. Even more concerning is that it was her 22nd birthday on December 2nd and she didn’t reply to any birthday messages. Concern grew quickly, and New Zealand police launched an investigation. CCTV footage discovered had shown Grace walking through the city with the man she had met that night through a dating app. The investigation progressed rapidly. The man was located and questioned. As the search continued police made a shocking discovery: a large suitcase with Grace’s body inside it, buried in a remote wooded area outside Auckland. Jesse Kempson (26 at the time) was taken into custody on December, 8, at 3 pm. He had been staying at the CityLife Hotel in central Auckland. He claimed everything had happened “accidentally,” but the evidence including surveillance footage, message history, internet searches, and inconsistencies in his statements convinced the jury that he was responsible for Grace’s de*th and for attempting to hide her body. Kempson appeared in the Auckland District Court on December 10, 2018, charged with m*rdering Millane. After a three-week trial, he was convicted by a unanimous guilty verdict and later sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years. The finding sent shockwaves throughout the country and made international headlines. The case sparked global discussions about women’s safety, online dating risks, and the vulnerability of solo travelers. Grace was remembered as a bright, adventurous young woman who loved exploring the world, and her story became a tragic reminder of how an ordinary situation can take a devastating turn. New Zealand publicly honored her family, and the case remains one of the country’s most haunting and widely discussed tragedies, not only because of its brutality but because of how unfairly it ended the life of a young woman simply following her dream. After her death, her mother and cousin founded Love Grace, a charity that helps domestic abuse victims. #truecrime #truecrimetok #killer #foryou #crime
