@stuffyoushouldknowpod: You can make a case that it’s a little off-putting to learn the world doesn’t really have any idea what to do with the nuclear waste we’ve been generating for several decades. The best we’ve come up with so far is bury it real deep and forget about it. #sysk #nuclear #nuclearwaste #nuclearpowerplant #sustainableenergy

We can very easily contain and even in some cases re enrich spent fuel it really isn’t an issue. Plus it creates a very little amount. Gas, oil, and coal all do have waste that is toxic as well but that’s just released into the air we breathe

Ever heard of coal ash?

But the oil, gas, and coal emissions go into the literal air we breathe. Also nuclear waste is stored in geological dead zones so we’re safe from radiation.

We know exactly what to do with it. ReUse it. Current regulations do not make it plausible to build rwactors that would use that fuel.

I think it was the Dutch(?) who engineered a process that reduces total waste to down to less than 0.03% of material. I probably have some of the exacts off but they invented this process like 15+ years ago. It's literally the cleanest form of energy we know of.

The used nuclear fuel is used in a new kind of rector called a thorium reactor I believe

the new reactors will use that as fuel.

But we have figured out what to do with the waste from every other fuel source? Or just garbage in general? At least nuclear waste gets treated like the problem it actually is.

I don’t know what he’s talking about because spit nuclear fuel is not stashed anywhere but on site in concrete casks. It was supposed to go to Yucca Mountain until that got blocked. Transuranic waste is sent to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project and that is not nuclear material. That is waste, like gloves, tools, suits, etc. that are contaminated. That gets buried about a mile below the surface in salt mines.

the shit that comes out of a reactor during a refuel goes into the spent fuel pool, from there it cools down and is then stored in casks for long term storage, most nuclear sites house all of the fuel rods and waste on site and have plenty of room to do so. take what these idiots say with a grain of salt they don't know what they're talking about.

nah that's absolutely fine.... make more nuclear reactors, more clean energy!

nuclear waste can be recycled, France has gotten really good at it.

The amount of space to place the entirety of spent fuel is probably equal or less than the size of like.. one major city landfill. It’s not embarrassing, it’s negligible.
