The hosts secured a much-needed win after a rocky start to their European season, with goals coming from Julián Álvarez, Conor Gallagher, and Marcos Llorente.  Atlético had to overcome some early pressure from the visitors before Álvarez opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Union SG had a goal from Antoine Griezmann ruled out for offside just before halftime after a VAR review. While Atlético had several chances after the break, it was substitute Conor Gallagher who extended the lead in the 72nd minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box.  Union SG pulled a goal back in the 80th minute when Ross Sykes headed home, setting up a nervy finish for the home side. However, any comeback hopes were extinguished deep into stoppage time when Marcos Llorente scored Atlético's third goal with a powerful finish, ensuring the victory for Diego Simeone's team.
