William Parks was the first man to write about Parasaurolophus, and he thought that they looked like Saurolophus, and so named them ‘Parasaurolophus’, meaning ‘like saurolophus’ 😭😭 Saurolophus was another duck-billed dinosaur and that name means ‘lizard crest’. Para was around 33-40ft (10-12m) long and 8ft (2.8m) tall at the hips. Para had a large, hollow crest - inside the crest was an empty tube that started around its nostrils and looped around inside the crest before directing back at the scull. Its been debated what this was used for. It could have been a way to identify others of its species, used to create a resonating sound to communicate, or used to regulate its temperature. These were advanced and sophisticated animals that evolved and adapted to their environment in miraculous ways!! Para didnt have any special defence mechanism that it adapted over time in the way we see with other herbivores such as Ankylosaurus, Therizinosaurus, Stegosaurus etc. Though, they were rather large, which would have potentially made them a harder target for predators, and we have presumed that they moved in herds, relying on saftey in numbers. Parasaurolophus lived in the Late Cretaceous period, and they’ve been found in Alberta in Canada, and both Utah and New Mexico in the US. Alright, thats it I think!
