The tension you are describing is uniquely American. I can’t think of another country with such extreme capitalism and wealth but lack compassion for those who are vulnerable.

A funny issue I have seen is that science has become a new religion in a sense. People take it as concrete, perfect truth when the reality is that science is simply consistently observable patterns. It should not be treated as law, like many people do. This world view actually comes from Christianity, when they threw out the lawmaker but kept the laws they believed he made

Britt, you are brilliant, but I think there is a huge glaring gap in this discussion. You forget the power of AI to transform everything-- culture, norms, society, religion.. you name it. AI will become our new God. A true Higher Power. Check out Ray Kurzweil on the Singularity and the religious fervor that will accompany it.

I think people not being able to thrive without religion is inherently a religious idea. The problem to me is how difficult and messy it could be to get there but I do think it would be really possible, education and community building and support would get us there I think but we would have to drastically change our policies and systems and I dunno how smoothly we might be able to progress towards that with so many systemic issues against us rn

I follow your work and others. And your reverence for Hitchens and Dawkins traps your mind in the machine era. Whereas humanity has passed that and is in the Ai era. We're no longer struggling to comprehend the mechanisms of things. but rather, sentience itself. And this era is built on decoding meaning in patterns, not simply physical outcomes of patterns. Meaninglessness will be objectively disproven in this phase of humanity is a sound prediction.
