This is the opening of The Smashing Machine. Director Benny Safdie wanted to immediately create a unique experience for the audience, by shooting on this VHS style format that represented the exact old 90’s YouTube clips that actually exist of the legendary fights that Mark Kerr had on this fateful night in Brazil, in the infamous no holds barred tournament called THE WORLD VALE TUDO CHAMPIONSHIP. Keep in mind, this was Mark’s very first professional fight. Since this was tournament style, Mark went on to fight and win multiple times this night. No holds barred, violent and absolutely brutal. In our film, after this opening, Benny Safdie then transitions to a different film format that brings the audience into a fully immersive atmosphere where you will experience this gut wrenching journey through the eyes of Mark Kerr. Where ultimately, winning becomes the enemy. But as with life, through the demons, addictions and pain… Grace is born again.
