If you have a bunch of cash at home, then it's not earning any interest. 🤷

Would this still apply if, for example, every pay I pulled $500 at an atm. And put that into an envelope. Can the atm receipts count as proof?

I almost lost my house because of the 200$ in coins I deposited. because they couldn't be "sourced" like come on... that's a little ridiculous.... 😆

We ran into this issue when we bought our home. My parents gave me a small amount of funds so we could look at a house. We were supposed to be able to use those funds as part of the closing fees. However since they were not in my account long enough we had to come up with that money again last minute so we could close

I don’t understand this. And I guess it’s because it’s my money. I’ve saved that money for years. It’s my money. Why does it have to be proven where it came from when it came from my hard work and I saved it

Can we track on our own documentation? Like a spreadsheet that demonstrates our savings over time? Like how a small business documents their own finances?

Do they investigate the source of a large check deposit, say $20,000 from a coin dealer or is a check from a business sufficient by itself?
Not related to buying a house but we had inherited gold coins from an aunt. Several years later sold them to a local coin dealer for $20,000. He gave us a cashiers check. I can see someone with a large amount of gold selling it for down payment.

With the rate of inflation, people need to understand that cash money is losing value. If it’s earning interest in a savings account, it’s probably not really “growing” in value, but it’s hopefully retaining value as the value of the dollar shrinks.

Yep. I inherited 50k cold hard cash and I couldn’t deposit it all in one shot. I had to do it increments for amounts under 10k so you don’t get flagged.

For anyone wondering, it goes beyond guidelines and actually falls under Anti Money Laundering regulations and how they work and a smattering of additional federal regulations and acts. They put the burden on a lender to prove a negative. i.e. if we cannot prove the money was not the result of money laundering, then we cannot consider them.

our lender made us provide a whole year of my husband's bank statement after we provided 3months worth bc they wanted more proof of his payroll earnings. He had been with his employer for 3yrs at that time.

They should just have all of their income deposited and not use it and live off the cash. Problem solved.
