@aptnnews: At a media event on Thursday, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew was asked about a newly passed law that will allow authorities to detain highly intoxicated people for up to 72 hours. He says the law represents a step towards making the province’s streets safer. #aptnnews #manitoba #news
No - they need trauma support - they need understanding / help - generational trauma support - mental health support- not being held against their will/ scaring them further

Interesting. Danielle Smith did this and the left screamed and threatened court action. 🤔

As a longtime supporter of harm reduction, drug education, prison reform, etc, I agree with Wab. There is an epidemic of addiction and it’s going to take some difficult and unpopular measures to resolve.

72hrs means that people will be detoxing in jail which depending on the substance is life threatening… So will there be staff trained in safe medical detox? Will there be access to medically necessary medications? Or are we just turning jail into a death camp for people with addictions? Also, will college kids under the influence in public also be included? Or is this just going to apply to people who look unhoused? I’m guessing the later. Very disappointing, especially from Kinew.

So treatment, counseling, affordable housing etc 🤔 Or just detox, and set them free to fend for themselves?

waste of time and money. You cant force an addict to quit being an addict, they have to be ready to quit.

Let me guess. You’re gonna drop them off at the hospital where we already have zero beds. I’m one nurse with up to 6 pts in ER. Security does not stay forever. Are you going to add staff so we can babysit the 1:1 withdrawn pt who doesn’t want to be there in the first place? No. Let’s focus our energy and resources to the ppl struggling with addiction who WANT help. Wait times for in-patient addiction programs and medically supervised detox centers already have month wait times and an addict may only have the clarity, resources, and motivation for a short window. We could help more people and have longer reaching impact if we were able to act more urgently in the moment. Forcing detox onto unwilling ppl will be traumatic and a poor use of resources.

Nope, it's the community failure that caused a problem for them. Fund families, lower income, community, psychiatry, justice and rehab probation services with programs, adult social services, advocacy and outreach, not barbaric victim blaming so you can cut the aforementioned and fund less while blaming the failed people, that's a Trump move.
