can you honestly say bernies movement progressed us towards our goals and not pushed us away from them?

also I don’t see how some can hate on genuine improvement to peoples material conditions. like you said it’d only help destigmatize socialism and doesn’t stop us from organizing

“Socialists” running in elections isn’t the problem, doing it in bourgeois parties like the Democratic Party and having to step back from statements said socialist made in the past to appease the party you are running for like Zohran did is. A social democrat winning an election shouldn’t be viewed as a victory for the fight for socialism. Build the proletarian party that will lead the revolution and for crying out loud abandon the democrats.

I would think that the point of advanced consciousness is to spread a platform that is more advanced than reformism i.e. present something beyond it and explain the need for it but I swear too many who know that reform is a dead end are wasting their energy pushing back on the demsocs instead of trying to lead people past them. I guess I understand the anxiety since in the Imperial Core it is *very* comfortable to be complacent and let consciousness be co-opted and recuperated but I still think the tactic is to advance consciousness with this momentum and build in parallel a movement that can later jettison elements that hold us back.

just to follow up on this at the end of the day it won't matter if he is not a true socialist/communist because people already perceived him as a socialist/communist therefore if people voted for him it means that they are willing to accept socialism

We need Zohran and we need the people who critique Zohran. These are both parts of the system.

Hopefully, rich people and institutional shills don’t kneecap every attempt at change he makes leading to news anchor saying that socialism doesn’t work whenever new progressives try to come to power and pointing to him as an example

How is that a “necessary” step? This “step” has never been a part of socialist revolutions historically. I’m from Denmark and we have had MANY Zohrans in our political history. Has it shaped core societal/material structures that are extremely beneficial? Yes. Has it effected the overton window within our political spectrum? Yes, but only in a way that simply slows the inevitable turn to the right. Has it ever brought us closer to a revolution? Absolutely fucking not.

Zohran is essentially a centrist in any sane country's political spectrum since he's a socdem at heart, acting as though he's what socialism is sullies the actual heart of the ideology because Marx wasn't saying the end goal is better public transit

but socialism is also not social democracy. the letter has limits and may or may not improve the live of people, because it still has to satisfy capitalist economic principles and exploit ppl. calling that socialism, when people will still be hurting, is harmful, and criticizing it for not being enough, for not being socialism would then be the better strategy, no?

I plead y’all to read J. Sakai. It’s not a problem of organizing, rather who they are organizing with, the people they consider’the average person’ or ‘the general population’. I wanna be hopeful, but with statements like ‘Maduro is evil dictator’ it lends me to believe future with Zohran is bleak.

Zohran has recapitulated the Democratic Party with his populist message, and his betrayals will be associated not just with Democrats but with socialism. Not only does he defang socialism by calling social democracy socialism, he blights it by associating it with the betrayals of democrats

quite objectively zohran doesnt challenge the status quo. this is not inherently *bad*, but its definitionally not enough to get what our goals are for the movement, unless your goal isnt to abolish capitalism and class society. zohran seems like a lovely person with a good heart and hopefully he can do some good for the people of nyc but just because he is in a position to do good doesnt mean it is now sacrilege to critique him, if anything we should do so more now BECAUSE hes an elected official. he has been increasingly watering down his language in regards to palestine, police and associating with establishment democrats (read, capital) so the people of nyc need to pressure him as much as they would any other mayor.
