On this day, 82 years ago, November 22, 1943, First Lieutenant Alexander Bonnyman Jr. of the United States Marine Corps was in the thick of the brutal Battle of Tarawa, leading a desperate assault on Betio Island in the Gilbert Islands. He was the Executive Officer of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, tasked with securing the island against a fanatical Japanese defense. On the second day of the battle, the Marines were stalled by a massive, heavily fortified Japanese bombproof shelter containing around 150 enemy soldiers. This strongpoint was inflicting devastating casualties and stopping the American advance dead in its tracks. Determined to force a breakthrough, Bonnyman took the initiative and led multiple demolition teams to attack the bunker’s entrances directly. He willingly moved forward, exposed to mortar and machine-gun fire, while directing the placement of flame throwers and explosives to clear the enemy from their protective positions. Despite the heavy enemy resistance, Bonnyman’s assault flushed more than one hundred defenders out of the bunker into the open, where they were cut down by Marine rifle fire. As the Japanese launched counterattacks to retake the position, Bonnyman stood resolutely at the forefront, killing three enemy soldiers before he was mortally wounded. His courage inspired his men to hold the position and ultimately break the back of the enemy resistance on Betio Island. For his conspicuous gallantry and self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty, First Lieutenant Alexander Bonnyman Jr. was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The medal was formally presented to his family by Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal in 1947. Bonnyman was buried in a battlefield cemetery on Betio Island, close to where he fell. He was 33 years old. On July 26, 2015, the remains of First Lieutenant Alexander Bonnyman Jr. were repatriated to the United States, arriving at Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam in Honolulu, Hawaii. His remains were identified on August 27, 2015, and on September 25, 2015, he was returned to his childhood hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. On September 27, 2015, Bonnyman was interred with full military honors and a flyover of Marine Corps Cobra helicopters in the traditional "missing man formation" at West Knoxville's Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery. His actions are one of the most celebrated examples of valor in the Pacific War’s island-hopping campaign, captured in footage by combat cameramen during the battle, making it one of the first Medal of Honor actions caught on film.
