Well, they do hurt! But they hurt less if we can see the growth. I can't speak for everyone but I used to beat the hell out of myself after a bad performance with self criticism and negative thoughts. The thing that helped me the most was realizing 2 things. 1. Beating myself up wasn't helping me have better meets or progress, so do I need to keep doing this? 2. If we can learn something from failure, thats a form of growth and we're actually getting better! For part 2 I always imagine a kid learning to ride their bike and as they're learning they may be leaning to the right side too much and they lose balance and fall. We don't pick on a kid for learning to ride their bike and falling, why would we pick on ourself? A no height can be like a kid learning to ride their bike.

"I keep falling to the right so maybe I'll try leaning to the left to balance out." Hell yea kid! Give it a try! No heights can work the same way "Huh, I blew through all my poles. The next meet ill start on my biggest pole as long as the conditions are the same." Learning is a form of progress! Part one can be a little harder if we have have things like perfectionism or people pleasing tendencies...or is it? This took me a long time to understand but things like perfectionism or people pleasing don't really help us either. So we can challenge those thoughts and eventually let them go. You have permission to be kind to yourself! Long story long, failure can be awesome! Its like bumping into a wall, and the wall telling us to try something else! Just make sure you don't keep trying to walk through the wall. You're not the kool-aid man.
