The Ancient Greek went as far north as Thule likely Iceland, Faroe Islands or one of the Scottish islands. There are no polar bears in this region. The name artikos comes from the constellation of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor which the North Star is part of. So Antarctica was the land opposite the bear constellations not no bear land.

Being an Ancient Greek and coming across a polar bear must’ve been like encountering an actual demon

Hate to break it to you, but Ursa Major is the name of the constellation and Ursa Major means great bear. The Greeks didn’t go to the Artic and name it cause of all the bears that are there. The artic was named after the constellation. Antarctica is in the opposite direction of Ursa Major, or away from the bear. Doesn’t have anything to do with actual bears. The Greeks didn’t go to the North Pole or assume that’s there would be a southern land mass, but no bears…

Speaks to how terrifyingly ferocious polar bears are for a whole society to agree to name it “land of the bears”

So, if they'd had gone south first, we'd have Penguinland and Nopenguinland?

north isnt necessarily "up" and south isnt "down" theyre just directions according to our place in the cosmos

Imagine finding a brand new continent that’s completely frozen and just has killer bears all over the place and that’s it. I would call it bear land too. That’s their land they can have it

Or is it more like “land the points towards Ursa (bear) major “ and “land that points away from bear”?

Seanxeno :
ursa major means "the great bear". and they thought bears were there because of ursa major, and because there was no great bear in the southern hemisphere, they thought it meant there could not be bears there

Named after the constellation not the polar bears, the fact the places have bears and no bears is pure coincidence!

Artico is named for the bear constellation in the sky and not the ones on the ground
