Jet Streams. #EduTok #Science #sciencetok #learnwithme #todayilearned #edutainment #learnwithsherlock #facts #interesting #space Did you know flying from Los Angeles to Miami takes four hours and forty-four minutes, but flying the other way from Miami to Los Angeles takes 6 hours? That’s a difference of one hour and fifteen minutes. You might be thinking this is because of Earth’s rotation from west to east, but not for the reasons you think and it’s also because of the sun. If you take a plane and have it float above our planet, it’s not like the earth is going to slowly spin and after a few hours the plane would end up in a different location. The floating plane would also move with the spinning planet. The real reason is because of something called jet streams or basically really really strong currents of wind that go from the west to east. Now what does that have to do with the sun? Well, there wouldn’t be any wind, if the sun didn’t exist. Wind is the movement of air molecules due to temperature differences. The poles are colder, and the equator is warmer, warm air goes up, and cold air replaces warm air. Now the question is, why is the wind generally from west to east? And the answer to that is the Coriolis effect. If our planet was stationary, wind would just move from the poles to the equator and back, but since our planet is spinning from west to east, wind goes to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. T L D R, flying from LA to Miami is faster because of the wind.
