Steven :
As an LDS member also, i think there’s a lot of bureaucracy sometimes to jump through before any help comes. I get that ppl can abuse the system, but i think it should be easy to help

As a current Bishop, I'd like to add some context to this. While the church does, in your opinion, have funds to help people, my ability as a Bishop to help anyone who comes and asks for help is dependent upon their willingness to follow through with a few things. If all LDS Bishops just handed out stuff all the time, there would be a line of people waiting to just receive, and the church doesn't just give handouts. It teaches self-sufficiency, and if all we do is help with physical things, but not with spiritual things, then we're not doing our job to spread the gospel. I've helped non-members who live within my ward boundaries before, but it was also under the understanding that this help is temporary and is meant to be a lifeline for them to get back on their feet. As is the help extended to members of the church, a lifeline to help them get back up on their feet. It's not meant to be a long-term option for people to receive assistance whenever they need it.

I left the church when I was 15. I know that the girl on the phone was incorrect. She needed to hand that phone to anyone else.

I asked the bishop here if we could utilize the bishops warehouse. He said we could but every member of my family had come work at the church for a few hours each week. Not so charitable. I grew up LDS, but the blatant hypocrisy of the members made me leave the church all together

What would you say are the biggest criticisms you have of the church?

Overall, I think it depends on the ward. I'm not LDS, but my neighborhood ward growing up would 100% help. I was friends with lots of members and they would always make sure I was fed and my family was okay (this was during the 2008 recession). It should be common practice for them to find someone who can provide assistance. Sometimes people in need simply don't have time to do research to find the "right" number. Quick, nonjudgemental responses are necessary at a time like this
