The US is one of only two countries (the other is New Zealand) in the whole world that allows pharmaceutical companies to target you directly with commercials… And in NZ, there is MUCH more oversight on pharmaceutical advertising than here in the US… Doctors spend MANY years in medical school and residency learning about which medications may be appropriate for patients, why do we think it is appropriate to make commercials directed at patients, who have little to no medical training? I get it, the right of pharmaceutical companies to make commercials is protected constitutionally as freedom of speech because medications do have benefits for some people (unlike products such as cigarettes or alcohol which cannot make commercials)… But when Pharma spends MORE on advertising than they do on research and development of drugs, do we think something is possible out of balance here?
We are talking about hundreds of millions of dollars per year! Furthermore, I believe that direct to consumer advertising of medications like Humira is often misleading and can rob you of the opportunity to think about lifestyle changes (like diet, which we KNOW is effective for MANY autoimmune conditions) first for your illness… This should be illegal… But that’s not happening any time soon, so we should be aware of the intentions of pharmaceutical companies and work toward tighter regulation of this sort of advertising… As well as educating doctors about the power of dietary changes for autoimmune illnesses… How do I think you should eat to combat you autoimmune condition? Start with a diet of the most sought after foods by your ancestors for hundreds of thousands of years… Organs, meat, fruit, honey and (more recently) raw dairy… #animalbased Wel#animalbasedremembering
