Ever wonder what causes leave to change color in the fall? In the summer, deciduous plants and trees create sugars through photosynthesis which absorbs the suns rays to allow a chemical reaction to occur between water and carbon dioxide creating oxygen and glucose sugars, and this reaction takes place in the leaves in what cells known as chloroplasts, which contain a pigment molecule called chlorophyl. There are many pigments in leaves and chlorophyl tends to be the most dominant of them, which absorbs a wide spectrum of light except for green, which it reflects back and is why we normally see leaves as green (though there are some exceptions - nature is wiggly). In the fall when the days get shorter and winter approaches, those trees stop photosynthesizing and start to prep for winter by sending nutrients from their leaves down to their roots. Their main concern is chlorophyl, because it contains high amounts of nitrogen, which is a key limiting growth factor for those plants and super valuable, so they really want to hang onto it. When chlorophyll is broken down to store that nitrogen, it allows for some of those other pigments to shine through and be seen, such as anthocyanin which create reddish hues, and carotenes and xanthophyll which creates orange and yellow hues. As these leaves slowly breakdown, other chemical processes also occur creating a wide range of colors from reds to purples and yellows and oranges, adding to the gorgeous kaleidoscope of the changing seasons. Pretty neat, hey?
