🧠That tug-of-war between wanting structure and hating being told what to do isn’t defiance…it’s nervous system wiring. 🧠ADHD brains crave scaffolding, but when support feels like pressure, the same nervous system that seeks help can suddenly go into defense mode. 🧠That’s where demand avoidance comes in, especially for those with PDA traits (pathological demand avoidance). 🧠For some of us, even gentle guidance can register as threat instead of support. 🧠The brain senses a loss of autonomy and flips into self-protection ➡️fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. 🧠It’s not “oppositional.” It’s protective. When executive functions are already stretched thin, one more perceived demand can feel like too much. We don’t need less support, we need it to feel collaborative, not controlling. Inviting, not imposing. Choice-based, not compliance-based. That’s how safety, autonomy, and executive function can finally work together. Regulating our nervous system and finding a calm center is always at the top of my list of ways to take care of my neurodivergent brain. It’s the foundation for everything else to be more efficient!! 👉IF you want to, I have TEN FREE science-backed tips to find calm (I even give a citation for each one!) NOW or anytime you need. It can be a great add to your toolbox. They are definitely part of my toolbox. IF this sounds cool, comment Regulate and I will send over a link. NO presh. ⁉️IF you have ANY questions about the tips, please ask me. Love you. Surthriving With You, XO, Dr. Jen #adhd #audhd #pda #neurodivergent #adhdtiktok
