Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (新宿御苑), one of Tokyo’s loveliest green spaces: Overview & History • Shinjuku Gyoen was originally the private mansion grounds of the Naitō family, daimyo during the Edo period. • In 1906 it was converted into an imperial garden under the Meiji government. • After World War II, it was opened to the public (officially in 1949) as a national garden. What Makes It Special • The garden is about 58.3 hectares (≈ 144 acres) and has a circumference of ~3.5 km. • It uniquely blends three styles of garden design: 1.	Japanese traditional garden — with ponds, bridges, islands, a tea house, carefully pruned trees. 2.	French Formal garden — symmetrical flower beds, paths, formal layouts. 3.	English Landscape / Western-style areas — open lawns, more natural/relaxed layouts, vistas. . •	There’s also a greenhouse (rebuilt in 1950) housing over 1,700 tropical and subtropical plant species. •	Trees: over 20,000 trees in total, including ~1,500 cherry trees. •	It’s famous as a hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot. The cherry trees bloom in stages: some earlier (weeping varieties), then Somei-yoshino, followed by later bloomers like Kanzan toward late April. Location / Access	Address: sinjuku Gyoenmae (Marunouchi Line), Sendagaya (JR Chūō-Sōbu Line), etc. Entrances	Three main gates: Shinjuku Gate, Okido Gate, Sendagaya Gate. Opening hours	Varies by season. 9:00-16:30 (Oct-Mar), longer hours in spring/summer. Closed days,Generally closed on Mondays (or the next weekday if Monday is a holiday), and during New Year’s from Dec 29 to Jan 3. During cherry blossom season (Mar 25-Apr 24) and fall chrysanthemum season (Nov 1-15), it is open every day. Admission	Adults ~ ¥500, students ¥250; children (junior high or under) free. Best Times to Visit & Tips •	Spring (late March to mid-April): Cherry blossoms—peak times are very busy. Some days require advance reservations during the busiest weekends. •	Autumn (early November): Fall foliage and chrysanthemums. A beautiful second peak of color. •	Avoid Mondays (unless special periods), and check for any closures. •	Give yourself enough time: walking around the full garden, stopping at the greenhouse, stopping for tea, photos, etc., might take 2-3 hours or more.
