All of my vented/coded/☠️patients got sung to when I was ER. Elton John was heard by many, and I’m sure if they were aware it, it was a welcome relief

I was a phlebotomist for 11 years and always fully communicated with patients regardless of what condition they were in. As not-a-nurse, I had no idea how deep they were under and how much they could understand but I made sure I told them.

I participate in non consensual info dumping with people who are full awake and generally just stuck in the same space I’m currently inhabiting, hope that helps Melissa

I think mentioning the maggots was non-consensual info dumping on me because WHAT. Nothing could’ve prepared me for that 😭😂

Just lost my mom after 1.5 weeks in the ICU... FWIW I could only hope that her nurse was kind enough to chatter her ears off while she was intubated when I wasn't with her ❤️

The way I use to love talking at my intubated and sedated patients. Like ok bestie let’s have a life debrief! I talk enough for the both of us! Wanna have a lil Taylor Swift concert here during bath? Oh you’re not a swiftie? You’re about to be!

Ethicist here, agreed. It’s the “reasonable person standard”. But with that comment let’s make common sense common again lol

I had a patient who had no pulse, and as I was helping move them from wc to bed in case we needed to do CPR (nurse was checking) I narrated what I was doing, because I do that regardless of consciousness, and as I told the patient that I was going to put a pillow under their head, THE PATIENT SAID THANK YOU and then we almost had to do CPR on me. 😂 Anyway, I am team talk to your patients and presume they can understand you 💙

As an ICU nurse I never trusted nurses who didn’t talk to their patients!

Are we supposed to be quiet while providing care? That's so weird! I'm telling my patients about everything from my favorite color to what cute things my puppies have done.

My husband doesn't remember much of what happened while he was intubated, but I will say that I'm sure he appreciated any conversation! He was much calmer when the nurses were chatting with him

Thank you for talking to your patient! I was a hospice nurse for 10 years and ALWAYS told my patient’s families to keep talking to them to the very end, they can hear you and deserve to be treated like they still exist, because they do!

Well, I sing to them and talk to them about what’s going on in my life. For however long they’re stuck with me in the ER. It’s the right thing to do.

Icu nurse here. I do the same thing! It’s also on my list of demands that if I’m intubated that the nurses gossip in my room so I can hear it!!!
