The Wildly Inappropriate Disney Movie People Forget Existed It’s hard to believe a movie like My Father the Hero ever slipped into the Disney catalog, but in 1994 it did — and it made $45 million doing it. The film follows 14-year-old Nicole, played by a young Katherine Heigl, as she heads on vacation with her divorced father, André, a kind but awkward Frenchman portrayed by Gérard Depardieu. At their tropical resort, Nicole becomes infatuated with an older teenage boy. Instead of simply trying to impress him, she takes things in a wildly inappropriate direction: she lies about her age and invents a full-blown fantasy backstory that includes claiming André is not her dad, but her much-older boyfriend. The lie spreads instantly, and suddenly every resort guest starts treating André like a predator — all while he has no idea what rumor is being whispered behind his back. When he finally learns what Nicole is doing, he reluctantly plays along, hoping he can somehow guide her out of the disaster she’s created. Despite its uncomfortable premise, My Father the Hero became a modest box office success. What makes that even stranger is the competition it faced at the time: the movie opened while audiences could have been watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Mrs. Doubtfire, or even Philadelphia. Yet plenty of people still opted for this bizarre father-daughter comedy. The film is actually a remake of a 1991 French movie of the same name — with Depardieu playing the father in both versions. So now the real question is… have you seen this movie? If you have, you already know how wild it is. If you haven’t, buckle up — it’s one of the most unintentionally awkward Disney releases ever made.
