Plz put on yall thinking caps. the story of Marsyas is about a god (apollo) challenging (Marsyas) a human musician to a battle of music Apollo WINS then CHOOSES to flay Marsyas alive n take his SKIN bc “how dare he challenge a god” mind u APOLLO CHALLENGED HIM. Think mixing blk slave history with Greek history. It’s not hard to understand and it’s actually a super beautiful choice to have a blk model when u think ab it its poetic to make the comparison of the two situations. Apollo didn’t HAVE to flay him alive he WANTED TO slave owners didn’t HAVE to enslave blk ppl or abuse n mutilate them they WANTED TO.

If the artist is black and they paint themselves darker to stand before an audience of people who are who they are, than either the artist IS discussing race and all of its optics OR the artist is comfortable being used for their consumption, thus making this about race. No matter what, this is a conversation about race. Personally I think the work is a poor translation of the story and very base in its conveyance of the theme.
