We all know what a limiter is, right? And many of you probably heard that True-Peak is a must! But what if I told you that True-Peak Limiting is not always needed? And in many cases, it actually sounds worse... As for me... I use Pro-L2 as my main limiter in most cases. But, honestly, I never liked how the True-Peak sounded... Is True-peak mandatory for your final limiting? NOT REALLY In Pro-L2 True Peak Limiting works at two different stages: 1. The limiting process will detect true peaks that already exist in the input signal, and reduce them appropriately. 2. Any true peak overshoot introduced by the ultra-fast limiting process itself, will be smoothly attenuated afterwards, ensuring the final true peak output doesn’t exceed the current maximum true peak Output Level. Essentially, the True-Peak mode acts as a safeguard against overshooting triggered by intersample peaks. But, instead of letting the true peak limiting process deal with remaining true peaks in the output, it’s even better to PREVENT HIGH TRUE PEAK OVERSHOOT in the first place. ✅ And the best way to minimize inter-sample peaks and distortion is to use OVERSAMPLING. Why? Because if you are Oversampling your limiter to x8, there is practically no difference between how accurately it can catch the intersample-peaks compared to True-Peak mode. I find that turning True-Peak off in Pro-L2 with Oversampling x8, and adding Ozone Maximizer as the final «True-Peak» catcher/safeguard - yields the most transparent sonic results for me, while keeping me safe and preventing extra distortion on poor converters/devices. This is what works (and sounds) best for me, but this is a never-ending discussion, and everyone has their own opinion… feel free to express yours ☺️ Try it, and let me know your thoughts! #vst #vstplugins #masteringengineer #mastering #mixingandmastering #mixingtips #fabfilter #mezcladeaudio #mixingtipsandtricks
