@itstherespawn: Activision once tried to buy Minecraft and its developer, Mojang, for $1.5 billion back in 2014. As one of gaming’s hottest IPs, Minecraft had a number of parties interested in making offers, including Activision and EA. According to former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, the company offered creator Markus 'Notch' Persson $1.5 billion. Speaking on Ari Emaniel’s podcast, Kotick said, “I had to spend five days in Stockholm with [Persson], the guy who founded the company. We offered him $1.5 billion. And he said, 'By the way, I'm quitting, and my top leadership guys are all quitting.' And they only had 30 employees at the company. Like, we can't run your company." Persson apparently later told Kotick that Microsoft had offered $2.5 billion, an offer which Activision seemingly weren’t prepared to exceed. According to Kotick, Xbox lead (and later Microsoft Gaming CEO) Phil Spencer along with Matt Booty were the ones who eventually secured the Minecraft deal for Microsoft. Activision Blizzard was later acquired by Microsoft for $75.4 billion, the largest video game acquisition by transaction value in history.
